DOWNLOAD BLOBBO GAME

Looks like it's for Windows but there are various clones around. Or you can pick them up at their regular price - it's a steal either way. Even though I could get the menu entries to appear they were entirely non-functional. One of the more obscure games I enjoyed was Blobbo, a puzzle game released for classic Mac systems. I whipped up a quick-and-dirty C routine to unwrap this first layer of encoding around the level data. Unfortunately the full version of the game became impossible to find, the rights to the game were sold to a Japanese company who were originally going to do a console port of the game. Or on a real old Mac if you have one gzme around! The levels were all storeed as blev resources in the Blobbo game. It assumes source is a C-style array containing the full level data, including the first 15 bytes of preamble.

I spent a lot of my childhood playing games, of all sorts. There are many different versions of this so I won't link to any particular version. This seemed to be a simple RLE style compression scheme.

There are currently two applications in that repository, one two decode the level data, and another to view Blobbo levels. Basilisk II would be the ideal starting point for that, being a 68k Mac emulator.

Sokoban The classic game from Japan, literally translated to 'warehouse keeper', in this game you push around boxes so that each box ends up on a particular goal square. Finally, the design of level 20 - Bblobbo - is a similar style to one used in several Blobbo levels. Hexcells This is a great little puzzle game that's similar to Minesweeper but has really cool added complexity.

The remainder of the data had to be the level layout. The first 15 bytes in each level were all the same.

Before long I had figured out how the level data was encoded. There looked to be a way to enable the in-game level editor through crafty resource hacking, but blobho proved to be false. I spent a good while pouring through the games resources.

Aside from the similar game mechanics and image tileset, elarel has several references to Blobbo, in particular, level 8, Maze of Mirrors, which is very similar to a Vame level it even contains the arrows on the right and bottom sides that point to nothing as well as the name of level 18 - Conveyorways - that mimics the name of a similar Blobbo level called 'Pipeways' which used pipes intead of conveyor belts, and which worked slightly differently.

There's also a Java clone called MyBlobbo which also adds a whole new set of levels, which is pretty cool. Or you can pick them up at their regular price - it's a steal either way. More links can be found here. The level data is stored a simple 32x20 two-dimensional array of tiles. In my mind I was expecting the level to be a grid of tiles, with each number corresponding to a tile type.
